Collection consists of widely scattered personal and family correspondence, financial accounts, and legal records concerning the purchase or sale of land in Stafford County, Va., and of African-American slaves, kept by members of the Forbes, Taylor, and Thornton families of Virginia. Includes materials primarily concerning Francis Thornton (1767- 1836) and Sally Innes (Thornton) Forbes (b. 1799), including letters, 1804- 1805, written by Harry Innes (1752-1816) at Frankfort, Ky., concerning health conditions and travel between Virginia and Kentucky.

Harry Innes was involved, at the time this letter was written, in what is now termed the Spanish Conspiracy. The conspiracy involved Kentucky petitioning to become an independent state and then entering into an alliance with Spain. This would be benificial to Kentucky economically while protecting Spain's valuable colony, Mexico. This alliance plan failed after the defeat of the Jay-Gardoqui Treaty. The treaty would have forbidden United States navigation of the Mississippi River for twenty-five...
